Impact of Diabetes on Oral Health

Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects the way the body uses blood glucose or blood sugar. Normally, the pancreas produces insulin to help convert glucose into energy. With Type 1 diabetes, the body stops producing insulin altogether, and with Type 2 diabetes, the body does not produce enough insulin to keep blood glucose levels under control. When left unchecked, both forms of diabetes can cause a number of serious complications throughout the body.

The mouth is affected by high glucose levels in diabetic patients. High blood sugars cause the blood vessels to narrow and can contribute to gum disease. Additionally, people with diabetes are more susceptible to infections like thrush in the mouth and dry mouth. A dry mouth occurs when there is not enough saliva to keep the mouth clean, which can lead to cavities and other oral health problems.

Over time, the high glucose levels from diabetes can also affect the nerves in the body. This increases the risk of experiencing temporary and permanent nerve damage to the teeth and gums. This damage can affect the ability of diabetic individuals to feel pain when something is wrong with their teeth, which can result in delayed treatment and increased oral infections.

Diabetic patients are also more likely to experience frequent dry mouth and require more frequent fluoride treatments to protect their smiles from developing tooth decay. Dentists may prescribe medications to reduce the impact of dry mouth on the teeth as well. These medications can include prescription toothpaste or mouthwash that contains fluoride for added protection.

Since diabetic patients are more prone to systemic health issues, it is important to take care of their dental health as soon as possible. Routine checkups and cleanings are the best way to prevent decay and other health issues from occurring in the smile. Some patients may require additional treatments to ensure their smile remains healthy while living with diabetes.

Healthy Diet Helps Prevent Gum Disease

Good nutrition helps your body stay healthy overall. A healthy diet keeps blood glucose levels stable and prevents them from going too high or too low. This helps you maintain a healthier weight and keep your blood pressure in check. Good nutrition also promotes good circulation in your gums and reduces the risk of inflammation or irritation in your mouth.

If you have diabetes, follow your doctor’s recommendations for a healthy diet – avoiding fatty foods, candy, soda, and other sugary treats can help stabilize your blood glucose levels and prevent many serious complications from developing.

Even if you practice great oral hygiene at home, you still need to see the dentist regularly to keep your mouth healthy and happy.
